About the Building Safety Regulator

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) is an independent arm’s-length body of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. It is responsible for overseeing higher-risk buildings, improving building safety standards, competence and culture, and ensuring residents remain central to the building safety system.

The BSR transitioned to a standalone organisation in 2026 and is continuing to develop its role within the Government’s building safety reforms.

The Role

The Chair will provide strategic leadership to the BSR Board during a significant period of organisational development and transformation.

The role will oversee governance and performance while supporting and challenging the Chief Executive and executive team to deliver the regulator’s objectives. The Chair will also act as a senior ambassador, building trusted relationships with government, industry, regulators, residents, and other stakeholders while promoting transparency, accountability, and public confidence.

Key Responsibilities

Board Leadership & Governance

  • Provide strategic direction to the Board and organisation.
  • Oversee governance and organisational performance.
  • Support and challenge the Chief Executive and executive team.
  • Champion transparency, accountability, and public confidence.
  • Help guide the BSR through its continued evolution as a standalone organisation.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build trusted relationships with government, industry, regulators, residents, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent and promote the BSR's role within the national building safety system.
  • Act as a key ambassador for the organisation.

Regulatory Leadership

  • Support the BSR's work overseeing higher-risk buildings.
  • Promote improvements in building safety standards, competence, and culture.
  • Keep residents and public safety central to the regulator's objectives.

Qualifications

  • Proven senior leadership experience within complex organisations.
  • Experience leading organisations through change and improvement.
  • Deep understanding of board governance.
  • Excellent judgement and strategic decision-making skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a high-profile public policy environment.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience of, or familiarity with, regulatory environments.
  • Commitment to public service and high standards of governance.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience within any of the following sectors would be particularly valuable:

  • Public safety
  • Housing
  • Construction
  • Built environment
  • Other safety-critical sectors

Compensation

  • £104,364 per annum

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 12 days per month.
  • Approximately 156 days per annum.
  • Term of up to three years.

Work Arrangement

  • Primarily virtual.
  • Travel across the UK required.
